Semana Santa in Antigua, Guatemala

The Holy week, and especially the Good friday, leading to Easter is the most spectacular time of the year in the charming colonial city of Antigua, Guatemala. Day and night, thousands of penitents -men, women and children-  walk across the city, their shoulders heavily loaded with statues of biblical characters. National and international visitors crowd the streets to watch these costumed processions and admire the "alfombras" -carpets- the inhabitants draw on the ground with colored sawdust to welcome the processions which will trample them.
